Anel Alexander
Actress and Producer
Currently based in Los Angeles, Anel Alexander is a South African born actress and producer with over 15 years of experience in the entertainment industry. Throughout the course of her career she has excelled both in front of and behind the camera.
As an actress, Anel is recognized as one of the most bankable stars on South Africa’s big and small screens. She is also one of just a handful of female producers shaping the landscape of South African cinema, locally and abroad.
Her latest feature film, ‘Sink’ (which she produced and starred in), continues to garner praise from critics and audiences around the world, winning multiple Best Film awards at various international film festivals. Most recently, ‘Sink’ won the coveted award for Best Feature Film at the 2017 South African Film and Television Awards where Anel was also nominated in the Best Actress category.
In the early stages of her career, Anel was known for her roles in two of South Africa’s most popular, local daily soap operas, ‘7de Laan’ and ‘Binnelanders’. Since then she has proven to be the darling of the local silver screen, starring in box office hit feature films like ‘Semi-Soet’ (Semi-Sweet), ‘Faan se Trein’ (Faan’s Train) and ‘Mooirivier’ (Mooiriver).
Other TV credits include well known South African TV shows like, ‘Zero Tolerance 3’, ‘Amalia 2’, ‘Hillside’, ‘Rhythm City’, ‘Getroud met Rugby’ (Rugby Wives) and presenting talk shows like the spicy arts and entertainment program, ‘Artcha’, and guest presenting for ‘Pasella’, one of South Africa’s most popular magazine shows.
Anel’s primary passion though is film, and together with her actor husband, James Alexander, and their company, Scramble Productions, she produced the independent feature films ‘Discreet’, ‘Semi-Soet’ and ‘Sink’. Not only did she help secure the funding, produce and promote the films, but she also played the leading lady in all three productions. ‘Discreet’ released cinematically in November of 2008 and was hailed by critics as a triumph for South African indie cinema. ‘Semi-Soet’ released in February 2012 and became one of the highest grossing Afrikaans films ever made and topped local box office charts for 2012. Scramble Productions’ much anticipated drama ‘Sink’ released in March 2016 with the press and critics giving the film 4 and 5 star ratings across the board and lauding the film as another benchmark South African production.
In between her work in the local entertainment industry, Anel is a dedicated wife to husband, James, and places a lot of importance on her close relationships with family and friends. She loves traveling, learning new things and firmly believes that life is too short for bad coffee, tasteless wine, dull books and boring movies!
